Microsoft just tried to turn Copilot from a sidebar into the desk itself.
On Sept. 25, the company introduced a rebuilt Microsoft Copilot experience with three headline pieces. Home is the new front door: Chat for quick questions and drafts, Cowork for multi-step jobs you hand off, and Office in Copilot so Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents live inside the same conversation — real editable files your team can share, not orphaned exports. Code lets people describe trackers, dashboards, widgets, or internal apps in natural language; Copilot builds them using technology related to GitHub Copilot, in a sandboxed, tenant-hosted runtime. Autopilot (formerly Scout) is a persistent cloud agent with its own identity and workspace: name it, give it a goal, and it can keep watching channels, chasing follow-ups, and running recurring work while you sleep.
Home and Code begin rolling out through Microsoft’s Frontier program in the coming weeks; Autopilot expands to private preview at month’s end. Microsoft is also pushing FinOps for AI tools so IT can set spending policies, see which agentic tasks pay off, and let users check their own credit use — with everyday Copilot chat on a subscription license and heavier agentic work on usage-based billing.
Why regular people should care
If you live in email, decks, and spreadsheets, this is aimed at you: fewer app hops, AI that drafts a budget or a brief in a real Office file, and — for non-engineers — a path to small custom tools without waiting in the IT queue. Autopilot is the “keep going without me” layer that could reclaim hours of status chasing. The meter matters too: clearer spend controls are how companies actually let people use these agents without a surprise bill.
It is a platform play as much as a feature drop — Copilot trying to become the next Office-scale home for work.
